Chinese Burial GroundDuring the 1850s, 1860s and 1870s, many Chinese came to Buninyong as part of the local gold rushes.
Because of a prohibitive migrant entry tax imposed on arrivals by the Victorian Government in 1855, most arrived by ship at Robe and walked the 450 kms to the Buninyong and Ballarat goldfields. For many years, the Chinese section of the Cemetery was a neglected grassy slope. In 2024, a major project to mark and rededicate the area was completed. Interesting historical details can be found on the signage which sits in front of the Chinese section. |
